The Irish leg of the international Dare to Be Digital games development competition has been launched today by the Digital Hub Development Agency (DHDA) and applications are now open for third-level students from a variety of academic backgrounds.

Dare to Be Digital will be co-ordinated in Ireland by the DHDA, supported by the North-South Cooperation Unit at the Department of Education and Skills, and provides participants with the opportunity to connect with leading computer games companies. Dr Stephen Brennan, chief strategy officer with the DHDA, believes this could give students a realistic route into this sector.

Travelling to Ireland for study
Citizens of certain countries who wish to pursue a course of study in Ireland must apply for a visa to enter Ireland before they travel here. Information on those who do not need an entry visa is available in our document: Visa requirements for entering Ireland.

Since 1 January 2011 there are changes to the immigration system for non-EEA students.

The number of students studying for UK degrees in overseas countries increased 13% last year, as universities focused their energies on international recruitment.

International offshoots of UK universities, partnerships with foreign institutions and online study mean there are now more students on UK university courses abroad than there are international and EU students coming to the UK to study.

Some 571,000 students studied abroad in 2011-12, a third more than in 2009-10, with universities enrolling most students in Malaysia, Singapore and Pakistan.

Oxford Brookes, which offers students training with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (Acca) the option to also study for a degree in applied accounting, recruited by far the most students overseas (251,990 or 44% of those studying UK degrees abroad). It was followed by the University of London (45,680), the Open University (42,685) and the University of Wales (16,250).

The Government’s Action Plan for Jobs 2013, published today, will support employment creation and provide targeted assistance to those who are unemployed to help them access the labour market, according to the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn T.D.
The Department of Education and Skills plays a central role in the Action Plan for Jobs 2013 in providing relevant education and training to assist the unemployed to enter or re-enter the workforce.
With a rapidly changing economy, the measures the Department will take this year are focused on aligning the education and training system with labour market needs, addressing skills gaps where there are real opportunities for employment and also targeting youth and the long-term unemployed.

“The government had to tighten the visa norms in order to keep away the immigrants who would abuse British hospitality. Unfortunately, such measures will always have some negative effects. Some student visas might have been refused due to discrepancies in documents. A few months ago I had similar problem.

I was asked to submit two forms of ID for my employer. But I do not need two forms of ID, because as an EU citizen I can move freely with my ID card only. However, I have to abide by the fact that the British must be very careful with the legislations and understand that them double checking has nothing to do with me, but instead is there to eradicate illegal immigrants. It was a bit of problem for me, but nationally it fits into the overall policy and makes it work well. Luckily, I managed to sort out the problem by submitting my birth certificate and driving licence.

Another thing I had to get used to is the multiculturalism. In my home country I lived in a Slovak – Hungarian environment, but here in London it has so many more nationalities and ethnic groups. For example in my job I have already addressed customers in 5 different languages. Seven, if taking into consideration Portuguese-Spanish and the fact that the Polish understand Slovak.

There is actually a really large Polish minority living in the UK forming a somewhat community. I know some of them and in most cases they are hardworking and fair people. Maybe it is just my observation, but it seems that they are more patriotic than Slovaks. They often work together, helping each other into a job and so on. Then again, it is human and normal to help your countrymen.”

Student visas were used so extensively by Indians to gain the right to work in the UK that they became known as “marriage dowries”, the head of migration policy at the Home Office has said.

At a conference in London on 22 January, Glyn Williams argued that the visa route had become a “vehicle for abuse” before the government tightened the rules.

“In India, UK student visas became known as the ‘marriage dowry’ because female Indian students were able to bring over their partners to work in the UK,” he said.

The coalition’s introduction of “educational oversight”, its inspection regime for institutions looking to sponsor international students, had resulted in around 500 private colleges withdrawing from the system, Mr Williams added.

The Minister for Higher Education and Skills, Ciaran Cannon T D said, “Ireland aims to increase the number of Indian Students studying in the country in three years.”
Cannon said that there are around 850 indian students currently studying in ireland for postgraduate degree in Engineering, Pharma, Business, Computer Science, Accounting and Hospitality Management.

“We want to double the number of indian students studying with us by 2015. And we are confident that we are building a significant momentum towards that goal,” he said.

According to the Irish officials, it is estimated that every 100 additional international students who came to ireland support the creation of 15 local jobs, through spending on tuition, accommodation and other living expenses.

Cannon said, “India is recognized as having some of the most talented and hard working students in the world and our top-class Higher Education Institutions (HEI) can provide an excellent education and also provide significant opportunities for career advancement in areas such as IT and Life Sciences,”

An education Ireland Students fair is slated to be held here tomorrow where Indian students will be able to meet and understand what Ireland’s leading HEI’s have to showcase, official said.

The Global Business Director, Enterprise Ireland, Julie Sinnamon, said the ministerial-led Education Ireland mission to India brought together the largest ever irish delegation to provide Indian students an opportunity to interact with experts from a wide range of disciplines from across Ireland’s leading HEI’s.
